Francis Burt, born in 1926, wrote his first string quartet while studying in Berlin in the early fifties, during times when many young composers were trying to dissociate themselves from the high-flying emotional world of the immediate and more distant past.

40 years later, in a small house in the east of Austria, he composed his second second string quartet, just as events from the immediate and more distant past exploded into the brutalities of the Yugoslavian civil war. The other composers represented on this CD were students of Francis Burt.
